Combining Plastic Surgery Procedures Can Add Value on Many Levels
According to Hawaii Plastic Surgeon Todd H.M. Mirzai, MD, combining procedures may provide just the right value proposition in terms of cost, recovery time and absence from work, compelling cosmetic surgery patients to proceed with treatment.
Honolulu, Hawaii (October 2010) – The doctors at Hawaii Plastic Surgery Associates are seeing an increase in the number of men and women choosing to combine several cosmetic surgery procedures for a more comprehensive improvement. Patients pursue plastic surgery procedures for a variety of reasons, and combining procedures can minimize obstacles such as expense, downtime and required time off work.
"Last year, there was a public media storm generated when a young Hollywood celebrity underwent a reported combined 10 plastic surgery procedures in a single case," notes Dr. Todd Mirzai, a board-certified Hawaii Plastic Surgeon at the practice. "Most surgeons and patients alike would raise their eyebrows hearing about such excess, because the perception is that typically more surgery means more risk. That being said, there are a number of reasons why combining a limited number of procedures might be sensible for a patient."
At Hawaii Plastic Surgery Associates, it is common to evaluate patients who are looking to be able to return to their outdoor lifestyles following pregnancy, massive weight loss, or other body changes. Because of the impact such conditions have on the body, the cosmetic concerns are usually multiple. Loss of breast tissue volume, saggy skin of the breasts and abdomen, and localized diet and exercise resistant areas of fat accumulation are common concerns.
"Being able to go to the beach is a cherished part of the Hawaiian island lifestyle," says Dr. Mirzai. "Therefore, multiple areas of correction are often required to satisfy the patient's aesthetic goals. Three of the most common procedures patients request to recapture their Hawaiian beach body are abdominoplasty, breast augmentation and liposuction."
Each of these procedures has their respective cost, recuperation time and required absence from employment. Abdominoplasty in Honolulu is a same day surgical procedure, but requires about 10 days off of work for recovery. Breast augmentation in Hawaii and laser assisted liposuction can typically take anywhere from 2 to 7 days to recover. When performed individually, one might be looking at close to a month of recovery time and medical leave from work.
As one of the only multi-surgeon plastic surgery practices in Hawaii, Hawaii Plastic Surgery Associates can often perform combined procedures such as abdominoplasty and breast augmentation together. Such procedures are often referred to as a "mommy make-over" and are popular because overall operative times can be less with two surgeons operating concurrently to expedite the required anesthesia time.
Because costs can be decreased when procedures such as abdominoplasty, breast augmentation and laser assisted liposuction are combined, the overall cost is less than if each procedure was done individually. Given the current economy, patients are seeking a value proposition in every respect. Patient selection is always important, and a pre operative medical clearance is mandatory. Choosing a Hawaii Plastic Surgeon Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery typically ensures that all the necessary precautions are taken to achieve a safe surgical outcome.
